TO MY SISTERS (2026)
I spent my 39th birthday back in Houston with sisters across 3 decades.
Life has given me plenty of lemons to deal with. But it has also given me soulmates that have pulled up throughout this journey with water and honey to make up the sweetest abundance of lemonade that I am living today.
I rented the perfect AirBnB and had a chef and bartender come take care of us while we reminisced on stories from the last 20+ years, talked endlessly about the ups and downs of motherhood and laughed at them reenacting things I’ve said and done from a teenager until now.
We cried as we listened to over a dozen women who have seen me grow up, sit in one room and pour into me. All using similar words and the same energy of deep and unconditional love.
They never miss an opportunity to confirm that I really am who I say and think I am, and then some.
These women have saved me, over and over and over again.
To my Tulsa Sisters - Tia, Staci, Mandela and KO
You women are the foundation of my heart, the first to show me what true love is. I didn’t know at the time that I was walking around with such a deep abandonment wound and you all were healing me before we even turned 18. You showed me that people do stay and that I am worthy of pure love. I would be nowhere without you. The way I persevered through Booker T and made it to TSU would have never happened without your unwavering support and hyping me up along the way. So many tears and milestones as kids together and journeying with me for the last 25 years. Please never forget how rare this is. I love you with more than I could ever say or show. Thank you for choosing me as family for this lifetime and still showing up for me, whenever and whatever.
To my H-Town Sisters - Ashley, Brittney, Chaz, Ern, Krissy, Jen, Anais and Kiaya
You women make Houston my forever home and I would have never survived those 20s without y’all. Your families were my family as I was navigating being in Houston solo. I evolved from a stubborn and feisty 18 year old arriving in 2005, to a grown ass woman with two degrees leaving for NYC in 2013. We truly grew up together into our womanhood and I can never thank you enough for still being with me to this day anytime I call. I love you deep.
And for my Kiaya and Ana, we met during my post-Houston era and we know God didn’t make any coincidences. I love y’all down. The memories, the love, the words, the messages, the emails that I have with each of you keeps me solid when life is doing its big one (in the best and worst of days). Thank you for sharing your heart with me.
To my NYC Sisters - Shaneza, Dana, Naika and Beck
I couldn’t have ever imagined having family in New York City. I never feel like a transplant because you help me root into this place day after day. You truly make living here comfortable for me through your warm love, energy and constant support. I wouldn’t be the mom I am or move courageously through one of the toughest places to live without you. Our love is the true definition of time doesn’t matter. You are my family for life and I am so grateful Grace gets to see us in real time being sisters. I can’t thank you enough for your love and showing up for me in all the ways.
